Review Snippets on Oats

And breathe. Nothing major happened this week from an algorithmic point of view but we have now got a bunch new page speed insights inside of search console to play with. Yey!
Here is this weeks Google slide deck with all the news as well as some short tutorials. Share it with your team to keep them up to date with the algorithm changes and SERP movements every week.
I did have the absolute joy of discovering the reviews of a bag of oats on the Asda site. Comedy gold. Just goes to show, just because we can optimise it….dosen’t necessarily mean we should.
In the News
Speed Insights…..everywhere
Not only did search console release the page speed insights feature, Google also released Site Kit, a Wordpress plugin that gives you all your google data from within the Wordpress dashboard. It’s potentially a great conversation starter that will help you get buy-in from you clients but in this weeks video, I put my tinfoil hat on and dive into what I think the plugin means for site owners down the line.

Prompting a lot of users to put them in the bin over privacy concerns.
Rank Ranger Study
Mordy from Rank Ranger has some interesting new data about featured snippets in desktop vs mobile. The result? 30% discrepancy between URLs…..that’s huge and will definitely have an effect on your reporting.
This Agency Life
This week I’ve made huge progress on building our SOPs which I am calling “the Brain”. I’ve been using an app that’s traditionally used by novelists called Ulysses. It’s really helped with outlining all the sections and having a dark mode has allowed me to work into the night without damaging my circadian rhythm too much.
I’ve realised that the only way to truly push the business forward is through pure sweat. I hate the idea of over working and very much subscribe to the Essentialist way of thinking (heck, our agency work a 4 day week). And yes, although productivity is better when you work less, you get less done when you work less. It’s like running a marathon. The first few miles will be much easier (productive) than the last few BUT by running the extra (working more hours) you go further (get more done).
We also had our first meeting with the branding agency Mr President this week and are very much looking forward to kicking off the big re-brand, just in time for the new year.
Things I’m enjoying
I found a great blog by a minimalist, affiliate marketing type called Malan Darras, some great reading and life advice.
I’ve also been learning to get better at Python and came across the cutest and nerdiest first date ever. A couple of teenagers having a Skype call teaching each other code. It’s awkward and amazing - and a great into to Python.
The out of office function on Google Calendar is this weeks tech favourite. After reading Ryan Holiday’s post called “why don’t we know how to protect our time?”, I blocked out my “library hours” with an out of office between 9 and 1, Monday to Thursday and all day Friday so I can reclaim some time to do deep work. The OOO function auto declines invites and sends them a link to schedule another time. Heaven!
I’m focusing hard on minimising lots of areas of my life including work. I’ve attempted no second screen and only laptop this week and have found myself to be much more focused.
I’ve been reading Walden and came across this passage that perfectly outlines my thinking about work and life
“I see young men, my townsmen, whose misfortune it is to have inherited farms, houses, barns, cattle, and farming tools; for these are more easily acquired than got rid of. Better if they had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have seen with clearer eyes what field they were called to labor in. Who made them serfs of the soil? Why should they eat their sixty acres, when man is condemned to eat only his peck of dirt? Why should they begin digging their graves as soon as they are born?

FYI, Google is trying to kill web URLs

Google wants users to use Google search as the access point for all content on the web. They are doing this by:
1. Removing visible URLs in Chrome
2. Penalizing sites for not using Google AMP
3. Removing URLs from search results
